Top Rated Car Insurance in Canada

Which insurers Canadian customers actually rate highest on claims and trust, and why the cheapest quote is rarely the right one.

Car insurance is the strangest thing to rank, because you buy it on price and judge it on something you hope never happens. The quote you compare and the service you eventually need are almost unrelated.

So this list ignores advertised premiums entirely. It follows studies that ask existing customers how their insurer behaved, with the largest surveying nearly 15,000 Ontario policyholders on claims, communication and trust.

One thing before you compare anything: if you live in British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba, basic auto coverage comes from a public insurer, not from the companies below.

The list

Number 1: CAA Insurance

Top of the customer study for the third consecutive year, and first in trustworthiness, product value and clear communication. Three years running is the part that matters: one good year is noise, three is a pattern.

  • First for three years running
  • Top for trust
  • Top for clarity

Number 2: Intact Insurance

Canada's largest property and casualty insurer, and moving up rather than coasting. It gained a place in this year's customer rankings, which for an incumbent of that size is harder than it sounds.

  • Largest P&C insurer in Canada
  • Improved year over year

Number 3: Co-operators

Ranked highest in Ontario specifically in J.D. Power's provincial satisfaction study. If you are shopping in Ontario, a province-level result is more useful than a national average.

  • Highest in Ontario (J.D. Power)
  • Canadian co-operative

Frequently asked questions

Why is my quote so different from my neighbour's?

Because auto insurance in Canada is priced on postal code, vehicle, driving record, claims history and how far you drive. Two people on the same street with different cars and records can legitimately get quotes hundreds of dollars apart. Any published 'average premium' tells you almost nothing about your own.

Is car insurance private everywhere in Canada?

No, and this is the biggest thing national rankings miss. British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba run public auto insurance through ICBC, SGI and MPI, so basic coverage does not come from the companies on this list. In Ontario, Alberta, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces it is private.

Should I just take the cheapest quote?

Only if you never claim. The studies that produced this list measure claims handling and communication, which is what you are actually buying, and the cheapest insurer is frequently not the one people rate well after an accident. Compare price against claims reputation, not price alone.

Does bundling home and auto genuinely save money?

Usually, and multi-policy discounts are among the largest available. It also concentrates your risk with one company, so if their claims service is poor you feel it twice. Worth doing with an insurer that scores well, worth thinking twice about otherwise.

Is this insurance advice?

No. We are reporting published customer satisfaction studies. For advice on coverage limits or a specific policy, speak to a licensed broker or the insurer directly.
